Utah Opera - Massenets Thais

Utah Opera - Massenets Thais at Capitol Theatre

Why see Utah Opera - Massenets Thais?

Utah Opera Presents Massenets Thais

This mesmerizing production by Utah Opera takes you on a journey through 4th-century Egypt, with ancient allure and religious fervour. Watch as Monk Athanael attempts to convert the alluring Thais to a life of spiritual devotion.

Led by chorus director Sharon Bjorndal Lavery, the voices of the ensemble complement Massenet's rich score. The production is enhanced by the artistry of Repertory Dance Theatre performers, conductor Steven White, and the direction of Andrea Cigni.

What Is The Story?

Initially met with Thais' mockery, Athanael's determination is resolute as he attempts to guide her away from the temptations of her lavish lifestyle. However, within the opulence of Egypt's elite, Thas undergoes a transformative contemplation, choosing to forsake her former existence and embrace the path of piety that Athanael advocates. As Thais transitions into her new life within the confines of the convent, Athanael grapples with his own conflicting emotions, realizing too late the depth of his love for her.
